A Video Atlas for McMaster General Surgery Trainees

General Surgery is a vast surgical specialty that covers a variety of benign and malignant conditions of the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, dermis, and soft tissue. Not only are general surgeons expected to be experts in understanding these disease processes along with their various management pathways, but also in intraoperative technical skill. This is proving to be a more and more challenging task, especially with additional nuanced and detailed knowledge of underlying disease processes, advancing technologies, and the advent of increasingly sub-specialized fields

In light of these challenges, surgical simulation platforms and remote intraoperative learning programs have been increasingly relied upon. The rising prevalence of laparoscopic surgery in particular, has lent itself to the development of online intraoperative video libraries through high-quality, comprehensive views of the operative field.

This platform will be designed in an attempt to present high-quality intraoperative videos to enhance General Surgery trainee learning. Furthermore, it will attempt to highlight nuanced surgical techniques specific to McMaster faculty to be of greatest relevance to McMaster trainees. This will be the first platform of its kind at McMaster University and will hopefully serve as a springboard for the development of a multi-disciplinary web-based domain for surgical residents spanning across numerous specialties.
